Ira’s Story: Puppy Training That Changed Everything
We've had several dogs the last 30 years and we always worked hard to help them "learn the ropes." We planned to do the same with Ira, but he had his own plan. We got him at 8 weeks and by week 12 he had turned into Ira the Terrible—biting, barking, jumping—and nothing we tried seemed to help. We had always had nothing but success with training our dogs, but we were overwhelmed and honestly didn’t know how to "fix" Ira's problems or even whether we could keep him. Getting Melanie on board was a total game changer. We were astonished at the immediate and complete rapport she established with Ira. Within 5 minutes of starting the very first session, Ira started to change. More importantly, Melanie immediately started teaching us how to change our own behavior, our tactics and methods with Ira. We learned to employ her tactics: careful observation, continuous connectivity, positive reinforcement and minimal corrective action. That required us to be patient and focus on Ira completely, which allowed us to better connect with him, understand his needs and help him understand what we needed from him. By session two or three, it felt like we had a completely different dog—both at home and out in the world. In reality, though, he was the very same, sweet, adorable, smart little guy, and WE had changed for the better. Later, when Ira started drifting into other unwanted behavior – like resource guarding with his food and toys - we reached out to Melanie right away, and she taught us how to help Ira trust us enough to "trade" resources and work with us to get what he wants and needs. With confidence and clarity, Melanie explained and demonstrated for us appropriate techniques and strategies to solve each problem behavior we have encountered with Ira. He now doesn't just cooperate with us, he seems to really enjoy doing it. Melanie works with us indoors and outside, using simple strategies designed to first get Ira's attention and then his cooperation. Our life with Ira, especially training and lessons, has become fun for everybody – dog and people. We began with her 6-session puppy package. By the time we finished that, Ira and we were all eager to continue more training lessons with Melanie. At 6 months, Ira is hands down the most well-mannered, cooperative and the happiest dog on the block. We truly don’t think we could have done this without Melanie’s support. We were at our wits' end, but her patience, expertise and dedication to Ira as a student - and the two of us as both clients and students - changed everything. From Melanie, we have learned a whole new and better approach to life with Ira. We feel very fortunate to have her available as a resource for us as Ira grows into the amazing dog we always hoped he could be.

Blue
& Sarah
Blue – From Leash Lunges to Leisurely Walks
In the heart of Chicago, Blue was a bundle of nerves on a leash—lunging, barking, and overwhelmed by the world around him. Walks were stressful for both him and his owner, Sarah, who felt at a loss for how to help. While Sarah took a much-needed vacation, Blue stayed for a board and train—where his real transformation began. Through patient, science-backed training and structured support, Blue learned how to change his emotional response at the root (through counter-conditioning, desensitization, and success-based experiences), focus on his handler, and walk calmly through the very environments that once triggered him. Today, he’s not just manageable—he’s thriving. Blue now walks with confidence, and Sarah has her calm, connected companion back by her side.
Murphy
& Family
Murphy – From Fearful to Fearless
After being rehomed at four years old, Murphy was overwhelmed by his new world—barking, growling, and reacting to everything that scared him. His loving new family was committed, but unsure how to help.
With Melanie’s guidance with behavior modification training, they learned how to support Murphy through science-based training and confidence-building exercises. Daily walks became chances for success, not stress—and Murphy began to shine.
Today, Murphy is calm, curious, and connected. His transformation is proof that with the right support, even the most anxious dogs can find peace.

Sadie – Turning Missed Cues into Medical Wins
I had been working hard to teach Sadie medical retrieval tasks—but something wasn’t clicking. She was great at chasing and retrieving tossed items, but when it came to objects already on the floor, she’d walk right past them. That one missing link made real-world retrievals a real challenge.
During a single virtual session with Melanie, everything changed. With just a few strategic adjustments and supportive guidance, Sadie had a breakthrough moment—she began picking up stationary items with confidence. Today, she happily retrieves whatever I need, even with distractions around. Watching her growth has been incredible, and it's such a powerful reminder that sometimes, one shift makes all the difference.

Foundations First: Lilly’s In-Progress Transformation
We just completed 4 weeks of our 12-week program for our adopted dog, Lilly. Lilly has many amazing qualities, but we really needed to address her reactivity to other dogs. Melanie’s training approach makes so much sense to me. She explains things clearly, demonstrates each task with Lilly, watches us perform it, takes videos of our sessions, gives us a written packet each week, and comments on videos I send during the week.
We’ve realized the importance of pausing our previous routine to teach Lilly essential foundational skills. We’ve embraced this program and are having so much fun learning together every day. Lilly’s progress is excellent, and I have high expectations for the remainder of the program because I’m gaining the knowledge to help my wonderful girl succeed.
